Beringharjo (hanacaraka: Market Beringharja) is the oldest market with philosophical and historical value that can not be separated by Kraton Yogyakarta. Beringharjo has the literal meaning of the banyan tree forest which is expected to provide welfare for the people of Yogyakarta. Beringharjo located on Jalan Ahmad Yani No. 16, Yogyakarta. There are many types of goods that can be purchased in Beringharjo, ranging from batik, traditional snacks, ancient money, child and adult clothing, fast food, the basic ingredients of traditional herbal medicine, groceries to antiques.
Beringharjo name given after the reign lane VIII on 24 March 1925. Sultan Hamngku lane VIII ordered that all agencies under the auspices of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta using Java language. Beringharjo name chosen because it has the meaning of the original forest area banyan (Bering) which is expected to provide welfare (Harjo). Beringharjo name itself is considered appropriate because the market is the former location of a banyan forests and Banyan Tree is a symbol of the greatness and shelter for many people.

Beringharjo region at first was a banyan forest. Not long after the foundation of Yogyakarta Kingdom in 1758, the area was used as a place of economic transactions by residents of Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. Hundreds of years later on March 24, 1925, the Sultan Palace commissioned Nederlansch Indisch Beton Maatschappij (Company Concrete Indies) to build market stalls. At the end of August 1925, 11 kiosks have been resolved and the others gradually followed.

Beringharjo has a philosophical and historical value with the Kraton having already passed through three phases, namely the kingdom, colonialism, and independence. Beringharjo development is one part of the design pattern of the city of Yogyakarta Sultanate called Catur Tunggal. The pattern of this city include four things that the palace as the seat of government, the plaza as a public space, the mosque as a place of worship, and the market as a center of economic transactions.
